Des Moines, Iowa – Over 100 local students are registered to attend Tech Camp 2022 hosted by Tech Journey from July 19 to 22, 2022.

Tech Camp is an immersive summer program focused on educating, inspiring and connecting individuals from traditionally underrepresented groups in the tech space with local professionals. The four-day camp has different learning tracks covering a range of topics in technology such as software development, hardware and physical computing and web development and media.

Tech Journey is a Des Moines-based nonprofit organization working to inspire youth and increase their knowledge and interest in technology through engaging learning opportunities. About 70 local technology professionals will volunteer this year for Tech Camp.

Tech Journey’s target demographic is Des Moines-area youth who otherwise may not have the opportunity to access technology as well as those under-represented in the technology industry. As such, priority consideration is given to socioeconomic status, gender and ethnicity for each incoming cohort of students.

Since 2013, Tech Journey has delivered Tech Camp for students in grades 8 through 12. Most students who participate are selected through a partnership with the Des Moines Public School district. Other students come from partnerships with area youth service organizations. Tech Journey ensures each student has the appropriate hardware and software, provides age-appropriate curriculum and the access to local professionals. This year’s camp topics will include, but are not limited to, programming with Python, front-end web development with JavaScript, 3D game development, cloud computing, information security, electronics, Arduino and computing hardware.

At the request of Franklin Jr. High management where Tech Camp takes place, older students will learn about the various methods of Agile as they develop software to control LED lights. The solution will be implemented at each public entrance to improve guest traffic flow in and out of the Franklin Jr. High building.
