SUMMARY:Jousting Robots
DESCRIPTION:One part making + one part coding + one part robotics = a whole lot of fun!\n\n\nIn this beginner workshop\, learners age 9 and above will engineer a jousting stick that attaches to a Finch Robot. Participants will be instructed and challenged in a safe and supportive environment to program the Finch to autonomously move and knock a ping pong ball off a cup. Learners will be introduced to the Finch Robot and to programming it with forward\, backward\, and turn blocks using the Snap! programming language while they engage in the engineering process\, collaborate\, and problem solve. \n\nLearners who have completed Hour of Code or worked some in Scratch will find this topic to be a great next step in their learning journey.\nNo coding experience is necessary but comfort with a keyboard and mouse is required.\nA parent or guardian is required to complete the registration process and learners under the age of 13 require a parent or guardian to be present during the workshop.\nPlease review our program policies before registering.\n\nNOTE: If you need to cancel a reservation\, please contact us so the reservation may be made available to someone else. \nTo learn more\, visit techjourney.org/techtime. \nThis workshop is made possible through a 2022-2023 STEM Scale-Up Program award from the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council. Robot Investigations with Finch Robot introduces learners of all ages and skill levels to physical computing.

SUMMARY:More Scratch: Create a Ghost Catcher Game
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Halloween: a ghost busters game!\n\n\nIn this fun and timely workshop for Halloween\, learners age 9 and above will further their coding skills by creating a ghost catcher clicking game. Using coding basics of sequencing\, events\, randomness and variables\, learners will have fun creating a project that advances their coding skills and use of Scratch. \n\nPrior Scratch or block-based coding experience is required.\nA Scratch account is not required but recommended for students who want to save their programs.\nA parent or guardian is required to complete the registration process and learners under the age of 13 require a parent or guardian to be present during the workshop.\nPlease review our program policies before registering.\n\nNOTE: If you need to cancel a reservation\, please contact us so the reservation may be made available to someone else. \nTo learn more\, visit techjourney.org/techtime. \nDeveloped and maintained by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Scratch is a great way for students to learn introductory coding. Not only is Scratch fun\, but by using blocks (think digital LEGOs®) instead of text\, emphasis is placed on learning coding fundamentals rather than worrying about the syntax of a programming language. Scratch also brings together communities of content creators by allowing Scratchers to share their work\, remix and learn from others.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Coding with Scratch: Make a Winter Blizzard
DESCRIPTION:NOTE registration for this workshop is required through the Altoona Public Library. Ages 10-13 only. \nIn this fun\, hands on workshop. kids will make an animated winter snow scene that uses randomization\, coordinates in a plane\, loops and cloning. A computer with internet connection is required as students will be receiving instruction via virtual meeting software and coding in Scratch at the same time. Experience with a keyboard and mouse and multitasking in multiple applications and windows is helpful. No Scratch experience is required but a Scratch account is recommended if the student wants to save his/her work. Students can create a Scratch account at scratch.mit.edu with the help of an adult. \nScratch is a great way for students to learn introductory coding. Not only is Scratch fun\, but by using blocks and graphics\, emphasis is placed on learning coding fundamentals rather than worrying about the syntax of a text-based computer programming language. Scratch uses blocks of code that are placed together to create programs and manipulate graphics. Scratch also brings together communities of content creators by allowing Scratchers to share their work\, remix and learn from others.

SUMMARY:TechTime Workshop: Code a Mad Libs® Story in Scratch
DESCRIPTION:Scratch is a great way for students to learn coding. Not only is Scratch fun\, but by using blocks (think digital LEGOs®) instead of text\, emphasis is placed on learning coding fundamentals rather than worrying about the syntax of a programming language. Scratch uses blocks of code that are placed together to create programs of instructions\, if/then statements\, loops\, expressions\, and so on. Scratch also brings together communities of content creators by allowing Scratchers to share their work\, remix and learn from others. \nIn this fun and engaging virtual workshop\, students further their coding skills in Scratch by creating a Mad Libs® story using coding basics of sequencing\, events\, inputs\, outputs and string manipulation. This workshop is for students age 9+. \n\n\n\nRegistration of each student by a parent or guardian is required.\nA personal computer with an internet connection is required for both the Zoom virtual meeting and Scratch.\nPrior Scratch experience and comfort with keyboard and mouse is required.\nA Scratch account is not required by helpful if the student wants to save his or her project.\nParental participation is helpful for younger students who may have difficulty navigating a multiple-windows environment to manage the Zoom meeting and coding simultaneously.\n\nScratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab and is available for free at scratch.mit.edu. SUMMARY:CoderDojoDSM Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Join us at CoderDojoDSM!\n\n\n\nEach month at CoderDojoDSM\, youth ages 9 to 18 can learn to code\, build a website\, create an app or game\, program a robot\, or simply explore technology in a less-structured\, creative\, and social environment. CoderDojoDSM is free and students of all skill levels are welcome. \nCoderDojoDSM meetups facilitate exploratory learning through project-based work. Students are welcome to bring projects of their own or we can suggest a project. Local technology professionals serve as volunteer mentors and help students as needed. Students are also welcome to share their projects as collaborative creativity and peer input is encouraged. \n\nThis month’s meetup will include breakout rooms for coding in Scratch or Python as well as working with the BBC micro:bit computer. Please indicate student interest on the registration form. For students new to coding\, we recommend starting with Scratch.\nA parent or guardian is required to complete the registration process for each student. Please review our program policies before registering.\nWe strongly recommend a parent or guardian be present with youth under the age of 13 as we cannot create online accounts for students and guidance on navigating multiple windows while working in Zoom is helpful for less experienced students.\nFor the best meetup experience and to interact with mentors\, students will need a personal computer with an operating microphone\, speakers or headphones and camera.\nThe Zoom desktop client is required and version 5.3.0 or later is recommended. Please update to the latest version prior to the meetup.\nTo learn more\, please visit coderdojodsm.com.

SUMMARY:TechTime Workshop: Code a Winer Snow Scene in Scratch
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to code an animated winter snow scene using Scratch \nScratch is a great way for students to learn coding. \nIn this fun and engaging virtual workshop\, students age 9+ will further their coding skills in Scratch by creating an animated winter snow scene using coding basics of sequencing\, events\, cloning\, randomness and loops. Students will also learn geometry basics such as planes and coordinates. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is for students age 9 and above.\nRegistration of each student by a parent or guardian is required.\nA personal computer with an internet connection is required for both the Zoom virtual meeting and Scratch.\nPrior Scratch experience and comfort with keyboard and mouse is required.\nA Scratch account is not required by helpful if the student wants to save his or her project.\nParental participation is helpful for younger students who may have difficulty navigating a multiple-windows environment to manage the Zoom meeting and coding simultaneously.\n\nScratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab and is available for free at scratch.mit.edu. Support materials are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 license.

SUMMARY:Hour of Code™ and an Introduction to Coding
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate 2020 Computer Science Education Week with Hour of Code™\nHour of Code™ is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) and Code.org to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming. \nJoin Mark Frederick\, Chief Technology Officer with MākuSafe\, and Tim Sieber\, Executive Director of Tech Journey\, for this free\, virtual\, introductory workshop. All individuals age 9 and above are welcome to participate and receive an introduction to computer science and coding in a safe\, supportive environment. Registration is required. \nIncluded in this workshop will be an overview of computer science and coding\, an example application of how MākuSafe uses computer science to solve big problems and an unplugged activity using computer science to create pixel art. Students will then work independently through a self-paced coding tutorial. \nA personal computer with an internet connection is required for both the Zoom virtual meeting and the self-paced coding tutorial. No prior coding experience is needed but familiarity with a computer keyboard and mouse is helpful. Parents\, we encourage you to assist early readers or students who may not have experience navigating multiple windows on a computer.
