SUMMARY:CoderDojoDSM June Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Join us at CoderDojo Des Moines!\n\n\nEach month at CoderDojo Des Moines (CoderDojoDSM)\, youth ages 9 to 18 can learn to code\, build a website\, create an app or game\, program a robot\, or simply explore technology in a less-structured\, creative\, and social environment. CoderDojoDSM is free and students of all skill levels are welcome. \nCoderDojoDSM meetups facilitate exploratory learning through project-based work. Students are encouraged to bring projects of their own or we can suggest a project. Local technology professionals serve as volunteer mentors and help students as needed. Students are invited to share their projects as collaborative creativity and peer input is encouraged. \n\nThis month’s meetup will include breakout rooms for coding in Scratch or Python as well as working with the BBC micro:bit computer. Please indicate student interest on the registration form. For students new to coding\, we recommend starting with Scratch.\nA parent or guardian is required to complete the registration process for each student. Please review our program policy before registering.\nWe strongly recommend a parent or guardian be present with youth under the age of 13 as we cannot create online accounts for students and guidance on navigating multiple windows while working in Zoom is helpful for less experienced students.\nFor the best meetup experience and to interact with mentors\, students will need a personal computer with an operating microphone\, speakers or headphones and camera.\nThe Zoom desktop client is required and version 5.3.0 or later is recommended. Please update to the latest version prior to the meetup.\nTo learn more\, please visit coderdojodsm.com.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Coding with Scratch: Make a Winter Blizzard
DESCRIPTION:NOTE registration for this workshop is required through the Altoona Public Library. Ages 10-13 only. \nIn this fun\, hands on workshop. kids will make an animated winter snow scene that uses randomization\, coordinates in a plane\, loops and cloning. A computer with internet connection is required as students will be receiving instruction via virtual meeting software and coding in Scratch at the same time. Experience with a keyboard and mouse and multitasking in multiple applications and windows is helpful. No Scratch experience is required but a Scratch account is recommended if the student wants to save his/her work. Students can create a Scratch account at scratch.mit.edu with the help of an adult. \nScratch is a great way for students to learn introductory coding. Not only is Scratch fun\, but by using blocks and graphics\, emphasis is placed on learning coding fundamentals rather than worrying about the syntax of a text-based computer programming language. Scratch uses blocks of code that are placed together to create programs and manipulate graphics. Scratch also brings together communities of content creators by allowing Scratchers to share their work\, remix and learn from others.

SUMMARY:Hour of Code™ and an Introduction to Coding
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate 2020 Computer Science Education Week with Hour of Code™\nHour of Code™ is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) and Code.org to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming. \nJoin Mark Frederick\, Chief Technology Officer with MākuSafe\, and Tim Sieber\, Executive Director of Tech Journey\, for this free\, virtual\, introductory workshop. All individuals age 9 and above are welcome to participate and receive an introduction to computer science and coding in a safe\, supportive environment. Registration is required. \nIncluded in this workshop will be an overview of computer science and coding\, an example application of how MākuSafe uses computer science to solve big problems and an unplugged activity using computer science to create pixel art. Students will then work independently through a self-paced coding tutorial. \nA personal computer with an internet connection is required for both the Zoom virtual meeting and the self-paced coding tutorial. No prior coding experience is needed but familiarity with a computer keyboard and mouse is helpful. Parents\, we encourage you to assist early readers or students who may not have experience navigating multiple windows on a computer.

SUMMARY:TechTime Workshop: Create a Ghost-Catching Game in Scratch
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for Halloween by creating your own clicker game to catch ghosts! In this fun\, hands-on virtual workshop\, students ages 10 to 15 will learn the basics of coding using the block-based programming language\, Scratch. Students will follow instructions to create the game and learn basic coding concepts of sequencing\, repetition\, events\, randomness and variables. A computer with internet connection is required as students will be receiving instruction via virtual meeting software and coding in Scratch at the same time. Experience with a keyboard and mouse and multitasking in multiple applications and windows is helpful\, but not required. No Scratch experience is required but a Scratch account is recommended if the student wants to save his/her work. Students can create a Scratch account at https://scratch.mit.edu/ with the help of an adult. \nRegistration is required through the West Des Moines Public Library. Visit their event page to register.
