SUMMARY:Tech Camp 2024
DESCRIPTION:Tech Camp is an immersive\, invitation-only summer camp experience for central Iowa high school students. Since the first camp in 2013\, a cohort of 8th or 9th grade students are invited each year with consideration given to socioeconomic status\, gender and ethnicity/race. The new cohort\, as well as the previous four cohorts\, are invited to attend the one-week summer camp. Thus\, many students in the program attend camp each year for up to five years as students who attend three or more years become eligible to receive a scholarship upon high school graduation.  \nDuring Tech Camp\, students attend inspirational speaker sessions\, technology exploration sessions and participate in other activities. Technology sessions are organized into tracks of software\, hardware and physical computing or web development and media. Technologies and topics typically presented include\, but are not limited to\, Agile\, Arduino\, cloud computing\, cybersecurity\, engineering\, game development\, HTML/CSS/JS\, machine learning\, Python and robotics. All sessions are delivered by local technology professionals serving as volunteer speakers\, facilitators and mentors. Students not only learn from and get to work alongside the professionals\, but they get to engage with the professionals while discussing education\, careers\, jobs\, motivations\, skills\, recommended resources and the like. \nSpecial thanks to Athene\, Bankers Trust\, The Bayer Fund\, EMC Insurance\, Farm Bureau Financial Services\, GuideOne Foundation\, John Deere Des Moines Operations Committee\, Lean TECHniques\, Merchants Bonding and Vermeer Corporation for sponsoring Tech Journey’s 2024 summer programming.

SUMMARY:2024 CoderDojoDSM Python Camp
DESCRIPTION:Level Up Your Coding Skills With Python \nJuly 30 – August 2\, 2024 \nThe goal of this summer camp is to help students participating in the Tech Journey CoderDojoDSM program “level up” their coding skills by being introduced to Python\, one of the leading programming languages in the world. Unlike standard CoderDojoDSM meetups where students decide on their own projects and work\, participants will receive instruction each day of camp as they complete small\, fun projects that will give them a basic understanding of coding in Python. \nRequirements: \n\nMust be an active\, current participant in Tech Journey’s CoderDojoDSM program\,\nSixth grade or older\, and\nCommitment to daily attendance.\n\nAs a free camp with limited seats\, Tech Journey desires to give priority to students who can commit to attending every day of the learning activity. Please do not register a student who cannot participate each day. \nRegistration is required at https://forms.gle/Qca9a6RLs1wqpiEQA. \nStudents will use Tech Journey Chromebooks to ensure a uniform camp experience. For continued work in Python\, staff will advise students on how to use Python after camp. \nContact info@techjourney.org with questions. \nSpecial thanks to Athene\, Bankers Trust\, The Bayer Fund\, EMC Insurance\, Farm Bureau Financial Services\, GuideOne Foundation\, John Deere Des Moines Operations Committee\, Lean TECHniques\, Merchants Bonding and Vermeer Corporation for sponsoring Tech Journey’s 2024 summer programming.

SUMMARY:Homeschool Coding and Robotics Class: Intro to Scratch
DESCRIPTION:Why coding and robotics? It teaches students to create rather than consume. It builds confidence\, allows students to take risks and fail while learning from mistakes as they iterate to better solutions (just like engineers). It allows for individual expression and enables creativity as students make stories come to life or create music\, animations\, games and the like. It supports critical thinking and problem solving. It can be associated to and used in all school subjects\, disciplines and industries. Digital literacy is a necessary 21st century skill. \nScratch is a great way for students to learn introductory coding. Not only is Scratch fun\, but by using blocks (think digital LEGOs®) instead of text\, emphasis is placed on learning coding fundamentals rather than worrying about the syntax of a programming language. Scratch uses blocks of code that are placed together to create programs of instructions\, if/then conditions loops\, expressions\, and so on. Scratch also brings together communities of content creators by allowing Scratchers to share their work\, remix and learn from others. \nThe size of the class will be limited to 12 students on a “first-come\, first-served” basis. There is no cost but a firm commitment of weekly attendance is expected. We understand absence due to illness. But as a free club with limited seats\, Tech Journey desires to give priority to students who can commit to attending all sessions of the progressive learning activity. Please do not register a student if known scheduling conflicts exist. If you are unsure if your student will like coding\, we can recommend other resources that may help discern interest. \nThe class starts Wednesday\, September 11\, 2024 and goes 8 weeks from 1:30 to 3:00pm each Wednesday. \nRequirements: \n\nAge 9 – 14\,\nExperience using a keyboard and mouse\,\nNew to coding (please do not register students with much prior Scratch experience)\,\nA Scratch account created at https://scratch.mit.edu/join\,\nStudent commitment to weekly attendance\, and\nAt least one parent needed weekly to assist with the class.\n\nRegistration is required at https://forms.gle/Qca9a6RLs1wqpiEQA. As part of registration\, parents will be asked to share availability for involvement to help the instructor and engaging with the students. At least one additional adult benefits classroom management and increases safety. No technical experience is required. Example responsibilities include distributing materials and supplies\, note-taking as needed\, following instructions to help students with unplugged lessons and helping students stay on task. All weeks will need to be covered in order for the class to take place. \nStudents will use Tech Journey Chromebooks to ensure a uniform class experience. \nContact info@techjourney.org with questions.
